We have been traveling full-time for the past 8 years as nomadic retirees, and one of our greatest passions is snorkelling. Our dive mask and Mares dry snorkel travel everywhere we go in the world, so we really have to love them to justify lugging them around the world.

Why I Love (and Recommend) the Mares X-Vision Mask

• The field of vision underwater is remarkable. The lens technology reduces distortion providing superior clarity, while enhancing contrast and colours underwater.
• The ergonomic design ensures all day comfort. Its silicone skirt hugs various face shapes providing an extremely comfortable fit and dry seal. N.B. Personally, I chose the black silicone skirt as my eyes are very light sensitive and the black silicone provides more of a shield for my eyes from the sun and glare. However, the clear silicone does give you more peripheral vision so which you choose will be based on personal preference.
• The silicone strap doesn’t get tangled in long hair and pull uncomfortably like many other masks I have used.
• The decreased volume of air contained within the mask also makes it easier to clear the mask should water find its way inside. N.B. I have worn this mask for 1+ hours and not had any water leakage.
• The ribbed design around the nose area makes it comfortable and easier to equalize as it is a soft-to-touch silicone. Also, I don’t feel the typical pressure points on the bridge of my nose.
• With adjustable straps and quick-release buckles, you can quickly get a snug, leak-free fit. I have quite a small face / head so I have had difficulties in the past finding a mask that fits me comfortably without leaking.
• Constructed from long-lasting, quality materials, is scratch and wear resistant, ensuring lasting performance even with heavy usage, lots of sun and water exposure, and it has survived 8 years of travel in my suitcase.

Features of the Mares Liquid Skin Mask

• Tri-Comfort – This mask has small ribs between the frame and the skirt around the nose to relieve pressure on the face, resulting in an increase in comfort.

How to Prepare Your Lenses After Purchase

When you first purchase a mask, there is a thin layer of silicone on the inside of the glass lens which happens during production. This layer of silicone is what causes your mask to fog. Anti-fog products will not work until it has been pre-cleaned, as anti-fog’s needs to reach the glass directly and with the silicone layer covering this, it will not work.

To remove this layer of silicone, you will need to purchase a pre-cleaner or toothpaste. These products have a slight abrasive in them and will scrub the silicone layer off. Put a blob of paste on to each lens on the inside only, give it a good scrub and rinse off with fresh water. Repeat this process 3 times to ensure you have scrubbed off all of the silicone layer. The glass will not get scratched as it is tempered.

Now, your mask lenses are ready for some type of anti-fogging product, or you can just spit or lick the inside of the lens as spit is a natural anti-fog. We have also used baby shampoo when we have had access.

How to Look After Your Mares X Vision Dive Mask

• Wash thoroughly (I personally like to soak mine in a bowl of clean water) after every use in clean fresh warm water to prevent it from perishing.
• Do not use chemicals to clean.
• Proper storage is key to the longevity of your mask. Store in a dark dry place (do no leave in direct sunlight) – this will prevent the silicone form turning a funny colour. Also, a protective case is a must!

Do I Recommend the Mares X Vision Dive Mask?

I have quite a small face / head so I have had difficulties in the past finding a mask that fits me comfortably without leaking. The Mares X Vision Dive Mask is one of the few masks on the market which when placed on my face without the band, did not allow air to enter when I was breathing. As such, this has meant absolutely no leaking when underwater.

The state of the art designed lenses allow for the widest possible angled viewing in every direction and this extra vision opens up my peripheral vision allowing me to see more exciting and wonderful things when snorkelling. Also, the ribbed design around the nose area makes it comfortable and easier to equalize as it is a soft-to-touch silicone.
