    • When: Annually on the Winter Solstice: 24 June, 2024 | 24 June, 2025
    • Duration: 1 day (but celebrations are also held in the days prior)

Celebrate the Sun with Peru’s Inti Raymi!

To mark the transition between winter and spring, Peruvians celebrate Inti Raymi in Cusco on the winter solstice (June 24, since Peru is in the southern hemisphere). Inti Raymi honours Inti, or the Incan sun god, and dates back to the early 1400’s.

Today, you can join the month of June celebration, and all the festivities leading up to the event on June 24, by watching re-enactments, cheering on dancers and of course trying chicha, the Incan beer

Inti Raymi is marked by processions and getting insights into the coming year from reading sacred coca leaves. You can catch a glimpse of the action from Korikancha, the Inca Temple of the Sun in Cusco, as well as from the Plaza de Armas in the city centre. Part of the celebration also takes place in the nearby Incan ruins Saqsayhuman, though it’s more difficult to get there because many roads are closed for the festival.

If you’re not in Cusco on the exact date of Inti Raymi, don’t worry. The celebrations stretch for days ahead of the festival. You’ll see parades of costumed dancers and musicians playing across the city. It’s impossible to not catch Cusco’s enthusiasm.

Inti Raymi was actually banned by foreign conquistadors, so the festival didn’t take place between 1536 and 1944. Peruvians have reinvigorated the celebration, which ties to ancient Incan civilization, the largest pre-Colombian empire.

Visit Cusco for Inti Raymi and to get acclimated to the elevation before hiking to Machu Picchu. In fact, this is a special time of year to visit the iconic Incan ruins. Hiking to Machu Picchu on the winter solstice, you’ll also see Peruvians honouring Inti within the ruins at sunrise. Celebrating the solstice makes a visit to Peru even more unforgettable.
